Amicalola Falls
|
Amicalola Falls is located in Amicalola
State Park west of Dahlonega. Amicalola is a Cherokee word meaning
"tumbling waters." The beautiful falls plunge 729 feet
in seven cascades to a reflecting pool at the bottom. As one of
the seven wonders of Georgia, Amicalola is the highest waterfall
east of the Mississippi River. There is a walkway which starts at
the bottom by the lower parking area and goes clear to the top of
the falls. About 1/3rd of the way up you'll see viewing platforms
and steps leading the way. From the top of the falls you have spectacular
views. Parking is located at both the top and the bottom so it is
possible to start the walk from either place.
The park covers more than 2,050 acres with
a dense hardwood forest . All seasons offer their own beauty at
Amicalola with wildflowers in the spring and summer. Flowering dogwoods,
mountain laurel and rhododendron. The fall season brings brilliant
fall colors. The winter months are quite and peaceful with fewer
tourist and many deer and wild animals that seek refuge in the park.
The park adjoins the 741,000 acre Chattahoochee
National Forest.
